Understanding RSS

As an administrator, you may need to include formatted data (news) from external Really Simple Syndication (RSS) feeds. For example, you're going to add New York Times news feeds (for example, http://partners.userland.com/nytRss/technology.xml), BBC news feeds (for example, http://feeds.bbci.co.uk/news/technology/rss.xml), and Yahoo! news feeds (http://news.yahoo.com/rss/tech) in the RSS page of the Palm Tree site. Whenever an RSS XML file is updated on the remote site, the page will reflect those updates on the next portal page reload, as shown in the following screenshot:

Figure 6.5: The RSS portlet

Let's add the RSS portlet to the RSS page first by following these steps:

  1. Add a page called RSS in the Palm Tree site's public pages by clicking on Add | Page under the dock bar menu.

  2. Add the RSS portlet in the RSS page of Palm Tree where you want to manage RSS news by clicking on Add | Applications under the dock bar menu.
