Overview of this book

ArcGIS Pro, Esri's newest desktop GIS application, offers powerful tools for visualizing, maintaining, and analyzing data. This cookbook will help existing ArcMap users transition to ArcGIS Pro and teach new users how to utilize its GIS tools effectively. You’ll learn how to create geodatabases, convert data formats, link tables from outside sources, edit 2D and 3D data, ensure data integrity with topology, and enable advanced geodatabase behavior. By the end, you'll be able to effectively use ArcGIS Pro as your primary desktop GIS application, maintaining, analyzing, and displaying data using common methods and tools.

Creating attribute rules

Attribute rules are another advanced behavior you can enable in a geodatabase using ArcGIS Pro. Attribute rules can be used to automatically calculate field values, perform data quality checks, or restrict invalid edits when updating data. They can be used to further enhance the capabilities associated with domains and subtypes, which were covered in Chapter 8.

There are three types of attribute rules: calculation, constraint, and validation. A calculation rule will automatically calculate values for a field in a table increasing editing efficiency. For example, if you have an acreage field, you can apply an attribute rule to that field that automatically calculates the acreage for a feature each time to add a new feature or edit an existing one.

A constraint rule limits values that can be entered into a field. This reduces the chance of invalid or bad data entry. Validation rules check attribute or spatial data to see whether they violate specified requirements...
