Overview of this book

When developers document the architecture of their systems, they often invent their own specific ways of articulating structures, designs, concepts, and decisions. What they need is a template that enables simple and efficient software architecture documentation. arc42 by Example shows how it's done through several real-world examples. Each example in the book, whether it is a chess engine, a huge CRM system, or a cool web system, starts with a brief description of the problem domain and the quality requirements. Then, you'll discover the system context with all the external interfaces. You'll dive into an overview of the solution strategy to implement the building blocks and runtime scenarios. The later chapters also explain various cross-cutting concerns and how they affect other aspects of a program.

V - DokChess

"Someday computers will make us all obsolete." - Robert ("Bobby") Fisher, World Chess Champion 1972-1975, in 1975.

This chapter describes the architecture of the chess program DokChess. I originally created it as an example for presentations and training on software architecture and design. Later on, I implemented it in Java and refined it for a German book on documenting software architectures (see http://www.swadok.de). The source code is available on GitHub and more information can be found at http://www.dokchess.de:

In the following architectural overview, you will learn about the important design decisions of DokChess. It shows the requirements that relate to the structure and design, basic solutions to problems, the structure of the software, and the interaction of key elements. The outline of the content follows the arc42 template.
