While the managed project phase of Sakai OAE development has been driven by the schools willing to commit resources and assume leadership roles, the design of the system has been influenced by input from the entire community. For example, the Sakai Teaching and Learning Group, a standing committee of educators in the community who focus on pedagogical concerns, developed a mind map of the kinds of capabilities that Sakai OAE should support. The map is divided into a series of "lenses," or perspectives from which the design and features in the system should be considered. The lenses aim to capture not just what teachers and learners need or want today in terms of learning capabilities, but what the members of the Sakai community believe they will need and want in the future.

By the time the managed project phase is ended in June 2011, Sakai OAE will have been tested and adopted by a number of schools to support a variety of academic needs. However, that is just the beginning...
