In the previous chapter, we introduced you to some of the key concepts of automation rules in Jira and looked at the basic building blocks of rules. To really get to grips with automation rules, we need to understand how we can use those building blocks to automate issues within Jira, and this is what this chapter is all about.

Here, we will learn how the various conditions work and when to use each of them. We will also cover how we can work with related issues, such as sub-tasks, linked issues, and stories within Epics. Importantly, you will learn how to use issue actions to make changes to your issue fields.

We will also cover how to use the advanced field editing function for those rare occasions when the standard field editors are not sufficient and finally, we will look at how to transition issues through their workflows and how to create scheduled rules.
