Autodiscover was first introduced with Exchange 2007 and allows any Autodiscover-capable client such as Outlook or most Exchange ActiveSync-enabled mobile devices, to retrieve its profile configuration settings by itself. Before Exchange 2007, it was up to the administrator to configure a user's Outlook profile with the correct server settings. This also meant that if a configuration parameter changed, the profile often had to be updated manually.
Most actions can usually be performed through either the EAC or Management Shell. Sometimes though, we prefer the simplicity of the EAC over PowerShell. In this case however, the EAC is not an option as most of the parameters can only be configured through the Exchange Management Shell.
