Chapter 6. Building and Optimizing Virtual Desktop Machine OS Images
With our Horizon View infrastructure now in place, it's time to turn our attention to the virtual desktop machines and look at how we can build an operating system image that is built and optimized to run as a virtual desktop machine.
In this chapter, we will cover some of the processes, best practices, and tools that will be used to create our virtual desktop images.
To build our virtual desktop machine, there are six steps that we are going to follow:
Creating the virtual desktop machine in vCenter
Installing the guest operating system
Installing VMware Tools
Optimizing the image for VDI
Installing applications and the View Agent
Creating a template/snapshot of the virtual desktop machine
There are a number of ways in which we can build the operating system, for example, using automated tools such as the Microsoft Deployment Kit, but in this example, we will perform a manual install using the installation media.
