802.11 wireless standards

In 1997, the IEEE introduced the 802.11 standard for Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN), which allowed any device with a Wireless Interface Card (WIC) to connect and communicate over an IEEE 802.11 network. Today, most consumers may not know what IEEE 802.11 is, but what they do know is the term—Wi-Fi.

Wi-Fi is another type of wireless technology that uses radio waves/frequencies to provide communication between devices. Wi-Fi is based on the IEEE 802.11 standards for wireless networking. Most portable devices such as laptops, smartphones, tablet computers, and even entertainment systems, such as gaming consoles, for example, the Sony PlayStation and Microsoft Xbox, each has a built-in Wi-Fi card or a WIC, which is used to communicate on an IEEE 802.11 network or what is better known as a Wi-Fi network.
