If you want to follow along with the sections on adding interfaces and configuring a DHCP server, it will help to have an additional network card to add to your pfSense system. If you set pfSense up in a virtual machine, the software should provide the ability to add virtual network cards to the machine. If you want to follow along with the section on VLANs, it is necessary to have one or more managed (in other words, VLAN-capable) switches.
