Overview of this book

Block, file, and object storage

Now that we have gone through why SDS is the future of next-generation workloads, it is time to dig a little deeper into the types of storage that we can achieve using SDS.

Traditional storage area network (SAN) and NAS solutions more commonly serve storage using protocols such as internet small computer systems interface (iSCSI), fibre channel (FC), fibre channel over ethernet (FCoE), network file system (NFS), and server message block (SMB)/common internet file system (CIFS). However, because we are moving more toward the cloud, our storage needs change and this is where object storage comes into play. We will explore what object storage is and how it compares to block and file storage. GlusterFS is also a file storage solution, but it has block and object storage capabilities that can be configured further down the line.
