Components of OpsWorks

When running cloud environments, we usually group resources together in groups that represent an application or another logical grouping. As with CloudFormation, the resources that are logically bound to one another and will be managed as a single entity are grouped together in stacks. Each stack can have multiple layers representing the logical separation of a function within a stack. Within layers, we will find instances that represent computing resources that are managed by OpsWorks. Instances run apps, which are representations of applications, patches, and other software that we apply to the instances. We maintain the configuration of the server by using Cookbooks, Recipes, Manifests, and Modules. A complete architecture of the OpsWorks environment is represented in the following diagram:
