When working with ES|QL, it's common to encounter a few errors and challenges, especially when you're just getting started. Here's a guide to help you troubleshoot some of the most frequent issues.

  • Syntax errors: These often occur when the query structure or command usage is incorrect, such as missing a pipe (|) or misquoting a field name. Double-check your query structure and ensure all commands are properly separated by pipes. For example, consider the following:
from retro_arcade_v2
| enrich countries on country_code with country_name
 stats count(*) by country_name

This code would lead to three errors:

[esql] > Couldn't parse Elasticsearch ES|QL query. Check your query and try again. Error: line 3:2: mismatched input 'stats' expecting {<EOF>, '|', ',', '.'}
