Deciding on the Storage Mode

The first step in developing a critical report for an enterprise-wide audience is deciding on the storage mode of the semantic model. In Chapter 1 we introduced three connectivity modes or storage modes while building a semantic model. They are as follows:

  • Import: Data will be imported and stored inside the semantic model.
  • DirectQuery: Data will be stored in the data source and the data will only be fetched when the users are interacting with the report. No data will be stored in the semantic model.
  • Live connection: The report will connect to a semantic model that is already published to the Power BI service.

In this chapter, we will look at a comparison of the semantic model storage mode options and understand the appropriate scenarios for choosing one over the other. We will also look at the following advanced connectivity mode options:
