Introduction to materials


A material is like a texture on an object. Without a material, objects are invisible. By choosing the right material you can make a simple object look detailed and interesting.

The difference between a texture and a material is that a texture is the source image that is being used by the material. The material can then be used to define properties that affect how the texture is mapped on an object. You can think of it as an extended texture.

Before we discuss each type, we will examine how materials work. Materials in Papervision3D have their issues. Knowing how they work helps you solve these issues.

In the previous chapter, you learned that 3D objects are made of triangles. These triangles are used as the skin of a 3D object. Every single triangle relates to a part of the material. The triangle information will be used to transform the flat material to something that seems to be placed in perspective. The more triangles an object has, the more seamless materials...
