Changing the default authentication settings


Liferay provides a built-in authentication mechanism that, by default, allows users to log in using their e-mail address. Additionally, there are a number of functionalities, such as automatic log in or forgotten password functionality, that assist users and help them go through the authentication process. However, in some cases, the standard authentication behavior must be modified.

Getting ready

Log in to Liferay as a user with administrator credentials. By default, the credentials are as follows:

How to do it…

In order to change the default authentication settings, perform the following steps:

  1. Log in as an administrator and go to Admin | Control Panel | Configuration | Portal Settings | Authentication section:

  2. Make sure that you are in the General tab.

  3. Choose the option that you prefer from the Authentication type drop-down list.

  4. Enable/disable the Allow users to automatically login? option.
