Our journey through three projects – the Bad Calculator, the Correct Calculator, and the Samsa microservice – taught us far more than specific techniques or patterns. The projects showed us a transformation in thinking about software design itself.
The three principles we've explored – using patterns natural to the language, allowing the language to help you, and thinking in Rust – aren't separate lessons. They're interconnected aspects of a unified approach to development. Natural patterns feel natural because they work with ownership and types. The language helps you when you trust its guidance rather than fighting it. Thinking in Rust means internalizing these principles until they become automatic. Each project reinforced these principles at different scales and in different contexts.
