System upgrade

Another advantage of high-level package managers is that they automate the upgrade of the entire system (or at least packages installed from repositories).

Upgrading a system with YUM or DNF

The command to upgrade all packages is dnf upgrade or yum upgrade. To force a repository index download, you can add --refresh. In some cases, you will also want to remove conflicting or outdated packages to complete an upgrade; in that case, you may need dnf upgrade --allowerasing:

$ sudo dnf upgrade
