The CISO operates in a world that is uncertain. Their key stakeholders on the board and management often have a limited understanding of cybersecurity. It is therefore not surprising that they have many doubts about it. This doubt can be transferred into doubting the ‘messenger’, in this case, the CISO. If the CISO loses the confidence of this audience, their role becomes increasingly difficult, making it nearly impossible to drive the cyber transformation required.
That is just one type of doubt that can affect CISOs. CISOs face several types of doubt that can undermine their effectiveness, including technical doubt and organisational doubt, as well as personal doubt.
Many CISOs have a deep technical background, where analysis competency has been a key strength. But the reality is that cybersecurity is a complex domain with many fine details. Even the most tech-savvy CISO does not have all the answers.
