Sunset signifies the end of the day; for the CISO, it usually means a global handoff of cyber operations to the team operating to manage cyber incidents and investigate issues.

Having said this, evening, however, also represents a heightened danger period. Historically, more cyber activity and attacks occur after-hours when cybersecurity teams are often at a lower staff ratio and response times can be slower (according to Arctic Wolf’s 2025 Security Operations Report, 51% of alerts are generated outside of traditional business hours: https://arcticwolf.com/resource/aw/security-operations-report-2025). As such, sunset for CISOs is also a reminder that cybersecurity is a continuous process, and in some ways, we never stop performing our role.
