In my career, I’ve been extremely fortunate to live for six years in Japan. I really do love Japan, and have had the privilege to live in Kobe when I was CIO at Eli Lilly and Tokyo when I was CIO at Metlife Japan.
Japan is a complex society with many quirks and unexpected characteristics. It’s a delightful place to visit and travel through; you would be enchanted with the quality of life. There is an incredibly respectful culture, with customs such as physical bowing to management that would likely make most Westerners uncomfortable. Work, however, is tough, and I admire the Japanese salarymen for their stamina and absolute dedication to their career.
This is a country that has a high expectation of success – just watch any game of baseball and you will see!
