A Day in the Life of a CISO

The role of the CISO is one lived on the precipice of chaos. From their vantage point, the CISO is in a position to see most of the faults and gaps that the enterprise faces. These truths may be candidly conveyed to the security team, yet the message presented to senior management and the board is often more tempered, perhaps an instinctive act of self-preservation, likely a result of the unforgiving demands of the role.
Indeed, the demands of the position leave little room for rest. Annual leave is often curtailed, and personal time is frequently disrupted by incidents or near misses. Even when the security team performs at its peak, it is usually only the CISO who recognises the sacrifices involved. Recognition and celebration are rare (and thus, never unwelcome). Thriving in such a position demands extraordinary resilience, persistence, and what might be considered by some as superhuman capabilities.
