The average CISO has likely not experienced needing to rebuild after a serious incident – this is a story that is not often told. As a CISO, your job is typically protecting the enterprise and spending much of the day remediating known gaps.
This chapter is about the one that got away. Your enterprise was breached, and your job is to start again. There are very few CISOs who would want to talk about this topic; indeed, many have been fired because of a major incident.
When bad things happen, the first focused actions are to restore operations. This process itself is not the end, but in many ways the beginning. A cyber ‘restore’ is purely data restoration to your current platforms. The board and management will be concerned about how customer and stakeholder confidence is regained and that the business can resume.
