Adding hosts to a vSphere Distributed Switch


Once a DSwitch has been created, we now have to add the ESXi hosts to the DSwitch, so that its physical NIC can be mapped.

How to do it...

The following procedure explains how to attach ESXi hosts to the DSwitch:

  1. Right-click on the DSwitch to which you want to add the hosts, and click on the Add and Manage Hosts... menu item:

  2. In the Add and Manage Hosts wizard, select Add hosts, and click on Next:

  3. Click on the green + icon to bring up the selected new host's window:

  4. In the Select new hosts window, select the hosts which you want to add to the DSwitch, and click on OK:

  5. The Select hosts wizard should now show the added hosts. Click on Next to continue:

  6. Select the unused physical adapters (vmnic), and click on Next:

    The physical NICs being selected will generally have their network backing configured correctly, so that the virtual machine will not lose connectivity when they are migrated to the DSwitch.
