Introduction

Rules can be defined as some actions automatically executed on certain pre-defined events and conditions.

Rules are instantly triggered whenever the configured event takes place. The rules engine checks the validity of the associated condition. If the condition is satisfied, the defined actions are carried out.

Just as an example, in case you are a database professional, you might be aware of database triggers. A trigger gets automatically fired whenever a certain event happens and it performs certain jobs. Rules are very similar to this. In daily life, you also probably use rules in a number of places—such as Outlook Rules. Alfresco rules are also analogous to this.
