Chapter 8. Deploying an OpenCms Solution

In the last few chapters, we have focused our attention on developing code and content for the OpenCms platform. Now, we will return to the administrative aspect of managing OpenCms. In this chapter, we will examine the issues surrounding the deployment of an OpenCms solution. In this chapter, we will cover:

  • Serving static versus dynamic content

  • Static exports

  • User authentication and management

  • Backup and recovery

  • Performance tuning

Serving Static versus Dynamic Content

In OpenCms, there are three ways of serving published content:

  • Serving statically from the OpenCms servlet

  • Serving dynamically from the OpenCms servlet

  • Exporting from OpenCms and serving from another web server

In this section, I will describe the first two cases, explaining the relative advantages of each. In the next section, I will discuss the option to statically export and serve the content from another server.
