Managing the Automatic Workload Repository


At the beginning of the chapter, we mentioned that there have been many different methodologies regarding the best way to go about performance tuning in an Oracle database. In the past, the Oracle database lent itself to a vast spectrum of ideas, as it is one of the most configurable pieces of software in existence. A DBA could spend hours examining various data dictionary views and testing different database parameters to find the perfect balance for a system. However, in Version 10g, Oracle attempted to create a consolidated performance tuning methodology by creating the Automatic Workload Repository, or AWR. In this section, we'll learn how to use the AWR to formulate performance tuning strategies.
