Before delving too deeply into hands-on recovery techniques, it's important to first have a complete understanding of the process. Database recovery is the act of restoring data from a backup and then, optionally, rolling forward in time by applying the existing changes. However, the recovery process is one that doesn't always work "by the numbers". It requires a DBA who understands the Oracle architecture and can respond appropriately to the situations that are presented. There are very few "cookie-cutter" database recoveries; they require knowledge and flexibility on the part of the DBA. In this section, we'll explore the concepts that make this flexibility possible.
