Loading data with SQL*Loader


Using an external table can be an extremely useful way to load data into tables, but there are other methods as well. As we mentioned, the type oracle_loader clause in our CREATE TABLE statement for an external table implicitly uses Oracle's SQL*Loader tool to load data on the fly. This utility can also be used explicitly from the command line. SQL*Loader is Oracle's de facto tool for loading large amounts of data into database tables. A common use of SQL*Loader occurs when flat file data is extracted from mainframe systems and migrated to mid-tier Oracle systems that function as operational data stores. In such cases, it is crucial that the data is loaded quickly and accurately. It is also important that SQL*Loader is flexible enough to accommodate many types and structures of data.
