As a training professional, I've always thought of training as a requirement. Companies need to provide training to employees in order for them to be successful. But in recent years, I've seen a shift in the way companies and individuals view training and who has power when it comes to training.

Training as a reward

More companies are using training as a way to reward and recognize employees. It can be done by sending an individual employee to a conference or workshop. Another approach is to bring a consultant into the organization for a day of training. Instead of companies saying "We have to conduct training", they're saying "We want to conduct training."

Employees are responding well to the change. Young professionals are eager to learn and have expressed a desire for training over benefits such as cash bonuses and company cars.
