Replication infrastructure

In order to have a working replication configuration, there needs to be a replication infrastructure in place.

The replication infrastructure consists of the following components:

  • Source host/cluster and target host/cluster with datastores

  • One or two backup proxy servers

  • Backup repository

In addition to this, basic network connectivity between the sites is required, and TCP/IP ports 2500-5000 need to be open between the sites. Ports in this range are dynamically assigned for the replication jobs when they are run.

For a detailed overview of all TCP/IP ports Veeam Backup & Replication v7 utilizes, check Veeam Support Knowledge Base Article 1518 at

When performing onsite replication, a single backup proxy is sufficient as long as it has access to the source and target at the same time. The same proxy server runs both the source and target transport services and transfers replication traffic uncompressed between the two.
