Planning boundaries and boundary groups

System Center Configuration Manager 2012 R2 boundaries can define network locations in which client systems might reside. Boundaries are defined at the hierarchy level and are no longer used to define sites. They are used to control which distribution point is to be used by clients. Boundary groups can aggregate boundaries for efficient management. Boundaries have two functions, as follows:

  • Automatic site assignment: In order to use this function, you have to configure one or more boundary groups for automatic site assignment. When automatic site assignment is in order, the client determines whether the current network location corresponds to a boundary group that is configured for site assignment. If the client is within a boundary, it will be assigned with the appropriate site. If you have a standalone site, automatic site assignment is not needed.
