In a typical computing term, a snapshot technology signifies the ability to record the state of a current storage device at any given moment and in the event of a failure, use the preserved snapshot as a guide for restoring the storage device. In other words, a snapshot primarily creates a point-in-time copy of the data which provides an excellent means of data protection. The snapshot technology uses a Copy-On-Write (COW) methodology.
Oracle ACFS Snapshot technology provides such capability using the First Copy on Write (FCOW) methodology. It provides an online read-only point-in-time image of an ACFS filesystem by capturing block/extend updates of a filesystem, which is available for immediate use. It supports a maximum of 64 snapshots per filesystem.
