An overview of IoT device types and use cases
To support the enterprise IoT markets described in Chapter 1, Transforming to an IoT Business, there are various IoT devices that could be selected depending on the specific use case. In general, IoT devices can be categorized into the following five categories, which cover most enterprise IoT use cases:
- Serial modems
- Routers
- Gateways
- Remote monitoring devices
- Asset trackers
We will go into more detail on cellular (LTE) IoT devices in Chapter 6, Reviewing Cellular IoT Devices with Use Cases.
Serial modems
A serial modem is the most basic and common IoT device supporting many enterprise IoT use cases, where the interface to the monitored/controlled machine/appliance is one of the following standardized serial protocols:
- Universal Serial Bus (USB)
- Recommended Standard 232 (RS-232)
- Recommended Standard 485 (RS-485)
- Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI)
- Inter Integrated Circuit (I2C) ...
