Overview of this book

Python's standard unittest module is based on the xUnit family of frameworks, which has its origins in Smalltalk and Java, and tends to be verbose to use and not easily extensible. The pytest framework on the other hand is very simple to get started, but powerful enough to cover complex testing integration scenarios, being considered by many the true Pythonic approach to testing in Python. In this book, you will learn how to get started right away and get the most out of pytest in your daily work?ow, exploring powerful mechanisms and plugins to facilitate many common testing tasks. You will also see how to use pytest in existing unittest-based test suites and will learn some tricks to make the jump to a pytest-style test suite quickly and easily.

Summary

In this chapter, we looked at how easy it is to find and install plugins. We also have been shown some plugins that I use daily and find interesting. I hope this has given you a taste of what's possible in pytest, but please explore the vast number of plugins to see whether you can find any that are useful.

Creating your own plugins is not a topic that is covered in this book, but if you are interested, here are some resources to get you started:

  • The pytest documentation: writing plugins (https://docs.pytest.org/en/latest/writing_plugins.html).
  • Brian Okken's wonderful book about pytest Python testing with pytest, which delves deeper than this book does, has an excellent chapter on how to write your own plugins.

In the next chapter, we will learn how to use pytest with existing unittest-based test suites, including tips and suggestions on how to migrate them...
