Practical Systems Programming in Go
By :
In building an index of files and directories, we have done more than automate traversal or collect metadata. We have given form to the formless. What began as a recursive walk through system paths became a deeper exploration into how we organize, access, and relate to information. Technically, we leveraged concurrency, file I/O primitives, and filesystem interfaces to tame a potentially massive, nested space. On a deeper level, we exercised our human need to catalog, to reduce the unknown to the known, to make the silence of a machine speak in terms we understand. Putting it in another way, indexing is an assertion of control over impermanence: files may come and go, directories may change shape, but the act of recording their presence — even temporarily — is an effort to preserve meaning in a system designed for change.
