You cannot improve what you cannot measure. Cost observability is the foundation of any optimization strategy. The concept of FinOps introduced earlier is a discipline with a significant number of players [2] in the market offering all kinds of reporting and recommending tools coupled with AI-driven automated optimizations too. It is very easy to take a tool-based approach to FinOps in your organizations, but in the context of our discussion here, we will discuss the goals and approaches that will let you be successful with any tool you choose to use. The FinOps Foundation defines the three phases of FinOps as Inform, Optimize and Operate.
These three principles coupled with the 4Rs framework [3] - Report, Recommend, Remediate, Retain - give you all you need to design your FinOps approach. In practice: collect cost data, identify inefficiencies, remediate, and automate to sustain improvement.
