A typical selection flow starts with asking the most fundamental question: What is your primary driver for adopting?
a developer portal? Once you do that, you are ready to assess organizational readiness. Refer to Figure 6.2 to understand the lifecycle. Before evaluating any tool, work through these four gates in order:
Define your primary driver. Is this primarily a DevEx problem (fragmented tooling), an Ops problem (runbook/incident discovery), a Governance problem (policy enforcement and catalog accuracy), or an AI/insights problem (developer analytics)?
Assess platform readiness. Do the backend capabilities exist to support what you want to surface? An empty portal is a portal of peril.
Evaluate team size and maturity. Small teams with limited platform ops bandwidth often benefit from COTS or managed solutions (Port, OpsLevel). Teams with strong frontend/TypeScript capability get maximum flexibility from OSS Backstage.
