The natural progression following a successful discovery phase is the preparation of an attack chain that leverages discovered vulnerabilities from the previous phase. Recall from Chapter 1 that the discovery and attack phases may require multiple iterations before the attack objective is achieved. With each iteration, more vulnerabilities are discovered which in turn allows the attack to proceed further before more discovery is needed to determine how to circumvent additional roadblocks. In this section, we will focus on the steps followed during the attack phase while keeping in mind that transition back into discovery is expected.
Attack chains refer to the sequential steps an attacker takes to exploit vulnerabilities in one or more systems to achieve the attack objective.
