There is no doubt that the holy grail of automotive attacks are the ones that can be launched remotely and can cause major consequences, including safety and financial impact as well as disruption of operation. A fundamental enabler of remote attacks is the compromise of one or more of the vehicle's wireless networking interfaces. Understandably, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are most worried about the possibility of remote attacks since these are the ones with the greatest potential of scaling across many vehicles.
The upward trend of expanding connectivity services in vehicles spanning Cellular, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Near-Field Communication (NFC), and regular Radio Frequency (RF) channels is further expanding the prospect of such attacks.
