Overview of this book

Docker allows you to create a robust and resilient environment to generate portable, composable, scalable, and stable application containers.

The book starts by installing the core Docker Engine on MacOS, Windows 10 and Linux desktops. We will then define multi-container applications and understand the advantages of using containers locally. Once this is done, we will deploy containers on a single Docker host which is publicly accessible. Furthermore, we will learn how to deploy and configure a Docker Swarm cluster and explore networking and storage third-party plugins to extend the core Docker functionality. Towards the end, the book will demonstrate how to monitor and troubleshoot day-to-day problems in addition to various real world examples of container deployments.

Monitoring containers

In the last section, we looked at how you can use the API built into Docker to gain an insight to what resources your containers are running by running the docker container stats and docker container top commands. Now, we are to see how we can take it to the next level by using cAdvisor from Google.

Google describes cAdvisor as follows:

cAdvisor (Container Advisor) provides container users an understanding of the resource usage and performance characteristics of their running containers. It is a running daemon that collects, aggregates, processes, and exports information about running containers. Specifically, for each container, it keeps resource isolation parameters, historical resource usage, histograms of complete historical resource usage, and network statistics. This data is exported by a container and is machine-wide.

The project started off life as an internal tool at Google for gaining an insight into containers that had been launched using their own container...
