Chapter 9. Getting Data in Power BI

The most important element of Microsoft Power BI is data itself, so getting the data into Power BI is essential. In this chapter, we'll spend some time discussing different methods of getting data from GP into Power BI. Although we'll be focusing on getting data from GP, the same principles can be used for any kind of data. It should also be noted that we will not be covering every method of getting data into Power BI.

In this chapter, we will connect to data in GP through the following listed methods. We'll also throw in a few notes about some data connection options that can be used for non-GP data just to spice things up and also because you are likely to have data in multiple sources that you want to include in your dashboards:

  • Getting data from files

  • Connecting to data in Dynamics GP directly

  • Content packs

  • Getting data from folders
