What is microservices architecture?


Microservices is a software architecture style in which complex applications are composed of small, independent processes communicating with each other using language-agnostic APIs. These services are small building blocks, highly decoupled and focused on doing a small task, facilitating a modular approach to system-building.

Microservice architecture has emerged as a popular response to the shortcomings of traditional monolithic applications. Microservices come with their own set of complexities and concerns. In particular, testing Microservices-based applications requires new approaches to confirm proper operation and continued availability under heavy load in the face of resource failure.
