On Saturday and Sunday, I looked at my notes a few times, but I didn’t seem to get any further. I still couldn’t see what my new role was supposed to be, nor did I figure out which of my coffee shop scenarios was most likely to be true.
I called Barry twice over the weekend. He was making progress and unexpectedly enjoying himself. I asked him why. It was because there were some things he’d wanted to say for a long time, some deep frustrations with the way projects were conceived and managed. The idea of using the numbers to show people what we did and didn’t know had given him a relatively safe way of expressing what he had been feeling in a way that executives would easily understand. If he wasn’t Operational-Environmental before, he was showing signs of it now.
I had a round of golf on Saturday and was rubbish, and a game of tennis doubles on Sunday and sparkled. My tennis partner was aglow – she also played much better than usual...
