Transaction logging strategies

There are the following two transaction logging methods available within Db2:

  • Circular logging: The transaction log files are rewritten when the available files have filled up with log records and the overwritten log records are not recoverable. To use this transaction logging mode, set logarchmeth1 to OFF. This is the default logging mode. With this type of logging, the only database backup type allowed is offline. This means that an outage to the application is required while performing a backup on the database. In addition, large binary object (LOB) and the LONG VARCHAR column data changes are not written to the transaction logs. However, these are tracked through shadow paging and are used for a rollback operation (if necessary).
  • Archival logging: The transaction log files are archived when they fill up with log records. You can activate archival...
