Managing the disposition of records
When information reaches the end of the retention period assigned, there are multiple reasons as to why you might want to review the information prior to deletion. For example, instead of permanently deleting the information, you might want to do the following:
- Suspend deletion of specific content for litigation reasons.
- Assign a different retention period for the information.
- Move the information from its existing location to an archive due to historical value.
This is where disposition review comes into play, allowing you to select one or more reviewers at the end of the retention period to make sure that the information is safe to be deleted or take another action on.
We briefly discussed the possibility to use disposition reviews in retention labels in the Configuring labels for records management section of this chapter in steps 7 and 8.
