White boxing is not a common term if you haven't been involved in the development of a game before. The history of the term actually comes from personal computers and server boxes that do not have a name brand, thus being a white box. White boxing in terms of game development is in spirit a similar concept, where a designer models an object using simple primitives, such as spheres, boxes, and cylinders to represent the volume and size of the final object. Most often, designers will iterate on white boxed designs many times as this allows a designer to create, remove, and modify quickly the geometric structures they create to suit their game's design. It is important that at the white boxing stage, designers do not get caught up in the details or even cosmetics of the objects, but rather get the level to a playable state as fast as possible.
