Jewelcrafting was the first profession added in an expansion; it was introduced in The Burning Crusade. Jewelcrafting focuses on cutting gems for players to socket in their gear, for added stats and jewellery (rings and necks).
The heart and soul of Jewelcrafting is cutting gems that players can put in sockets in their gear. Gems come in seven colors:
Red
Yellow
Blue
Orange
Green
Purple
Meta
Technically, Meta isn't a color but it has its own socket type (only found in helmets). Gems, with the exception of Meta gems, span three different qualities:
Uncommon
Rare
Epic (not released yet in Mists of Pandaria as of writing)
No matter what the quality, the following naming conventions are used for cut gems, and each name will give the same stats, albeit in values appropriate to the level and quality of the gem:
