The Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS), introduced for the first time in Windows Server 2003, is a feature that enables you to restore previous versions of files and folders quickly. With VSS, there is no need to take the applications offline to back them up. So, just like that, the VSS reduces the administrative effort. However, all that should not be taken to the point where the VSS is better than backup! Instead, VSS is a technology that facilitates the communication between the backup application, the applications that are being backed up, and the storage, to allow them all to work better together. From the point of view of work, the VSS generates local shadow copies, which serves as a platform for the Previous Versions feature, so that the latter then can enable users to view, revert, or recover files and folders that have been modified or deleted.
