Since the birth of JavaScript back in 1995, web applications hadn't really used this scripting technology at its very limits. Typical examples of JavaScript application were image rollovers, changing <select /> options after other user selections, form client-validations, auto-complete in combo-boxes, and so on.
However, five years ago, new widgets appeared in browser web pages that caught everybody's attention, being Google suggests one of the most remarkable examples.
After a while, a new term was coined that gave a name to this new approach: AJAX, after Asynchronous JavaScript and XML. Although neither of these two are strictly necessary to create an AJAX application they are commonly used.
The AJAX concept is easy to explain. While viewing a web page, the browser communicates with the server, posting or retrieving information, without leaving the original page. Then the user is told what has happened, usually based on the server response.
