A rolling shutter defect is a problem produced by devices that capture footage progressively scanning the frame from top to bottom. DSLRs and mobile phones that use this method of capture can show a poor image in which vertical lines appear against an oversaturated background. In this example, blinds at a window, the vertical lines distort as the camera moves from the left-hand side to the right-hand side, moving ahead of the progressively scanning method.
